Background
After qualifying from Westminster Medical School (Imperial College) in 1985, Mr Casey undertook neurosurgery training at Atkinson Morley Hospital (AMH) and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital in the UK.
In 1997, he had his first consultant appointment at Charing Cross Hospital’s Neurosurgery Unit, before taking up his current position at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. This post was created specifically in order to bring together the two disciplines of orthopaedics and neurosurgery.
Teaching
Mr Casey teaches regularly in spine faculties both here in the UK and throughout the world. He is honorary senior lecturer at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Institute of Neurology at UCL, and a tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons and AO Spine Foundation faculties. He also helped to establish spinal training for the European Association of Neurological Surgeons (EANS), and has served on the World Federation of Neurosurgeons (WFNS) educational council.
Memberships and associations
Mr Casey was president of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS), and one of the founding Directors of the European Association Neurological Surgeons (Spine section).
He also served as a council member for the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), and is a founder member of the European Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Group.
Publications
Mr Casey is currently the UK’s most published spine surgeon with more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and more than 20 book chapters to his name.
